How Do I Know if I Need Hormone Therapy?

Were you awake last night with cold sweats? At work, were fanning yourself, trying to get through another hot flash? Is your sex drive at about a 2? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then hormone therapy may be right for you.

Hormone therapy replaces hormone levels that naturally decrease with aging. During perimenopause (your periods are slowing and getting ready to stop) and menopause (your periods have completely stopped for 12 months and your body no longer makes estrogen and progesterone), many women experience symptoms that could be helped with hormone therapy. Here is a list of symptoms women often experience:

  • Hot flashes
  • Breast tenderness
  • Worse PMS
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing
  • Urinary urgency
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble sleeping

This is a long list. But, you may ask, why bother with therapy? These symptoms aren’t that bad and won’t last too long, will they? Well, every women is unique. On average, women tend to have these kind of symptoms 4 years but some may have these symptoms for up to 10 years. That’s a long time! For some women, these symptoms can be severe.

Traditional hormone therapy has involved taking a hormone pill of some combination of estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. Usually, it would take women weeks, even months for the hormones to start working in the body and for symptoms to improve.

Here at Trilogy, we offer a bioidentical hormone therapy called pellet therapy. A small pellet of hormones (larger than a grain of rice, smaller than a “Tic Tac”) is inserted under your skin. Your body absorbs the hormones it needs from the pellet constantly and these hormones can start to work within 24 hours! Within one day, you can feel better. With pellet therapy, you don’t have the hormone fluctuations you get with getting hormones other ways. With hormones working in your body, many of the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause improve, including sex drive and performance. Who knows? On pellet therapy, you might be tempted to pull out some of that lingerie that hasn’t seen the light of day in a while.

Negative side effects of pellet therapy are minimal and resolve themselves. Expect some temporary breast tenderness and some short-term water weight gain.

Positive effects of the therapy include more energy, better sleep and feeling happier. Muscle mass and bone density will increase while fatty tissue decreases. You may notice increased strength, coordination, concentration, and memory. Each pellet last 3-5 months and is naturally absorbed into the body, although high levels of constant stress and intense physical activity can cause the pellets to be absorbed more quickly. Everyone is different.

We offer free pellet therapy consultations with our in-house nurse practitioner. Call Trilogy Medical Center today! (801) 747-2273 We will be happy to answer your questions and book all of your appointments. Ask us about our monthly specials!”
