Neurotoxins and Fillers Explained

Neurotoxins and fillers | Trilogy Medical Center | Murray, UT

It is amazing how many choices are out there for enhancing beauty. Sometimes, though, having so many choices can be confusing.

It’s hard to know what the best treatments are for your needs. Sometimes you hear the names of products or procedures but you may be unsure what they are or how differently they are used.

Below is a description of two common injectables used for all kinds of non-surgical procedures—neurotoxins and fillers. Hopefully having information on these two types of facial treatments will help you decide what is best for you.

What are neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are a class of injectables that interfere with nerve signals in the body that cause muscles to contract. The most commonly-used neurotoxin is Botox. Other neurotoxins include Dysport and Xeomin. Sometime people have repetitive facial expressions that cause a deep wrinkle, for example, a frown line between the eyes. When Botox is injected in that wrinkle, the muscles causing it relaxes and the wrinkle magically disappears. This treatment is best for deeper wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movement and facial expressions.

What areas are neurotoxins used for?

  • Frown lines between eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  •  Crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes

How long do neurotoxins like Botox last?

Botox and other neurotoxins usually take effect within 2 weeks. Botox lasts 3-6 months. The muscle gradually stops relaxing and the wrinkle will return without more treatments.

What are fillers?

Derma fillers are a class of injectable that fill in lines and wrinkles. Aging causes tissues to thin out. Because of this thinning out, wrinkles become more apparent and the skin sags. Fillers work best for static wrinkles, wrinkles that are seen without your face moving. Fillers can also be used to contour or fill in cheeks or other parts of the face for a smooth, youthful appearance. They restore volume and fullness. There are a number of different fillers on the market including JuvedermRestaylane, and Sculptra, just to name a few.

What areas are fillers used for?

  • Cheeks
  • Lips
  • Mouth
  • Under eyes
  •  Scars

How long do fillers last?

Fillers take effect almost immediately and last for 6 months to a few years. Some of them stimulate the body’s natural collagen to form in the wrinkle that was injected, and so they last longer.

Can neurotoxins and fillers be used together?

Yes, at Trilogy we often use both. We have so many options available to us that we can custom build your individual treatment plan. If you have both forehead wrinkles and wrinkles around your mouth or lips, we can use both fillers and neurotoxins to target both areas.
